Social impact is a term used to define significant positive changes that address injustices or challenges among specific groups of people. A big impact starts with a big idea, eventually culminating in a program or service that helps individuals who are disadvantaged in some way. Putnam Service Dogs is committed to making an impact on people with disabilities other than blindness and veterans with PTSD through adopting rescue pups and transforming them into valuable members of the community. Now 8 years old, they’re growing each year with the support of donors like you.
An Important Mission with a Big Impact

Lift Up Two Lives.
By rescuing pups from shelters, transforming them into capable, adjusted, and well-bonded service dogs, and providing them at no charge to groups of people who face unique challenges, Putnam Service Dogs makes a big impact – not only for veterans with PTSD and people with physical disabilities, but also for their amazing dogs and their wonderful donors and volunteers who make their mission possible.
Putnam Service Dogs, founded in 2016, and still a young, small nonprofit is rated as a Charity Navigator four-star-rated organization. This prestigious rating means they’re considered exceptional, and are highly effective as an organization. Putnam Service Dogs is also
BBB accredited (less than 10% of nonprofits have achieved this rating), a 501(c)3, and a Platinum Candid (Guidestar) organization. Every action they take is guided by their values of compassion towards people and dogs, excellence, transparency in all aspects of their operation, and thoughtful ue of their resources.
Unlike other service dog schools, Putnam Service Dogs are free of charge. They champion both their dogs and their people, and that shows in their highly effective results. All of their dogs in training are placed with someone with disabilities, unless they have severe temperament or health issues. Their trainers match a graduating or release dog to their potential person, and a Meet & Greet of those potential matches is held for the dog to show who their person is. Their dogs are the ultimate decision maker. The strong chemistry and love between the pair creates magic. Two Lives are Lifted Up, and a BIG IMPACT results.
Making a Big Impact at Every Stage
Putnam Service Dogs makes their big impact at multiple points in the training process, from rescuing and training pups to changing the lives of our Volunteer puppy raisers and the dogs’ recipients.
The biggest impact Putnam Service Dogs makes occurs when we provide service dogs to recipients. These improve the recipients’ quality of life, helping them to live happier, fuller, more independent lives.
They carefully select rescue pup by assessing their temperament, their demonstrated abilities, their projected size, and their health. After spending six to 18 months with one of a selfless volunteer puppy raisers, where a pup is socialized and learns basic obedience and house manners, a pup, if not released yet, will enter formal service dog training. The Big Impact during each step – from saving a dog from a potentially difficult life to giving volunteers an opportunity to make a big impact of their own – changes lives for the better.
Most service dog organizations with quality training standards, achieve only about forty percent of the dogs ultimately becoming service dogs. Those that don’t complete the Putnam Service Dogs training program still help people with disabilities — still make a big impact. These dogs live the rest of their lives as highly valued and loved companion. The training they’ve received from Putnam Service Dogs greatly increases the attractiveness and ease of living with the dog as companions and a member of the family.
